What is 201 Stainless Steel?

201 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed as a cost-effective alternative to 304 stainless steel. It contains lower nickel content, replaced partially by manganese and nitrogen, making it more affordable while maintaining good strength and corrosion resistance. This grade is particularly resistant to general atmospheric corrosion and offers excellent toughness at low temperatures.

201 stainless steel is commonly used in applications where cost is a factor, but moderate corrosion resistance and mechanical properties are still required. Typical uses include kitchen utensils, appliance components, automotive trim, and decorative applications. While it performs well in mildly corrosive environments, its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is lower than that of 304 or 316 grades, particularly in chloride-rich conditions.

Although it is less expensive, 201 stainless steel still provides good performance in many non-critical applications, making it a popular choice in industries seeking a balance between cost and functionality.

201 Stainless Steel Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: Generally between 450MPa-650MPa. Higher tensile strength so that it can withstand greater tension without breaking.

Yield strength: generally between 200MPa-300MPa. 201 stainless steel’s yield strength indicates that it will yield and deform under a certain external force, but still can maintain a certain bearing capacity.

Elongation: generally between 30%-55%. Good elongation means that the stainless steel has good plasticity and toughness.

Hardness: usually between HB180-HB253. 201 Stainless Steel’s hardness gives it a certain degree of wear resistance and resistance to deformation. It is suitable for some applications where surface hardness is required. However, its hardness is relatively low compared to some high hardness alloy steels.

201 Stainless Steel Corrosion Resistance

201 stainless steel has a certain degree of acid and alkali resistance. However, compared with 304, 316 and other stainless steels, its corrosion resistance is poor. Due to the high manganese content in 201 stainless steel, it will hinder the formation of stainless steel passivation film. For example, in 3.5% sodium chloride solution, the pitting potential of 201 stainless steel is – 32mV, which is much lower than that of 304 stainless steel, which is 312mV. 201 stainless steel corrodes faster in the salt spray environment. If the product requires high corrosion resistance, it is generally not recommended to use 201 stainless steel.201 stainless steel in strong acid, strong alkali and other corrosive media, its corrosion resistance will be significantly reduced. For example, in some chemical production processes involving highly concentrated acid and alkali solutions, the use of 201 Stainless Steel may result in faster corrosion damage to the equipment.
