What is 309 Stainless Steel?

309 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent high-temperature resistance and oxidation resistance. With a composition that typically includes 23% chromium and 13% nickel, 309 offers superior strength and corrosion resistance, particularly in environments involving elevated temperatures. It can withstand prolonged exposure to heat up to 1900°F (1038°C) in continuous service and up to 2100°F (1149°C) in intermittent service, making it ideal for heat-resistant applications.

This grade is commonly used in furnace parts, heat exchangers, kiln liners, and other components exposed to high heat and corrosive atmospheres. Its high chromium and nickel content provide excellent oxidation resistance, even in cyclic heating and cooling conditions, while maintaining strength and ductility.

Although 309 stainless steel excels in high-temperature environments, it is not as resistant to chloride-induced corrosion as molybdenum-containing grades. However, its exceptional heat resistance and stability make it a reliable choice for demanding thermal applications.

309 Stainless Steel Corrosion Resistance

309 Stainless steel has a high chromium content. Chromium can form a layer of dense chromium oxide protective film on the surface of stainless steel. So that it has good resistance to atmospheric corrosion. It is not easy to rust in the general atmosphere.309 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance to oxidizing acids. Because of the presence of chromium, nickel and other alloying elements, it prevents the further corrosion of the acid on the metal matrix. Thus, it can be used to manufacture some chemical equipment parts, etc. that are in contact with oxidizing acids.

Stainless Steel 309 has good resistance to salt solutions such as sodium chloride. In the marine environment or the use of salt solutions for processing and treatment and other occasions, 309 stainless steel products can better resist the erosion of salt solutions. The corrosion resistance of 309 Stainless Steel is also excellent at high temperatures. It can be used in vulcanizing environments up to 1832°F (1000°C). It can be used to manufacture high-temperature equipment such as high-temperature stoves, furnaces, petrochemical reactors, heat exchangers, and other high-temperature equipment.
